Check Your Call Letter for Sectional Timing
IBPS papers are commonly conducted with a fixed time allotted per section rather than one open 60-minute block, which changes how you should practise — you cannot borrow time from an easy section to rescue a hard one. The exact arrangement for your cycle is stated in the official notification and your call letter, so confirm it there and set your mocks to match, rather than assuming.
The 7-Day Plan
The structure below assumes you have already covered the syllabus and are consolidating.
- 1Day 1 — Full-length mock at your real exam slot time. Analyse it properly: which section bled time, not just which answers were wrong.
- 2Day 2 — Reasoning drills: puzzles and seating arrangement, which carry the largest block of marks and the largest time risk in the section.
- 3Day 3 — Numerical Ability: simplification and approximation, plus number series. These are the fastest marks in the paper and should be near-automatic.
- 4Day 4 — English: reading comprehension and error spotting. Then a second full-length mock.
- 5Day 5 — Revise your error log from both mocks. No new material. Add a short speed drill on your weakest of the three sections.
- 6Day 6 — Final full-length mock, then stop. Sort out your documents, ID proof and the route to your centre.
- 7Day 7 — Light revision of formulas and shortcuts only, an early night, and nothing new.
Attempt Strategy That Clears Cutoffs
With a 0.25 penalty against a 1-mark reward, a genuine 50-50 guess is mildly positive and a blind guess is not. The bigger risk in this paper is not guessing though — it is time. A single hard puzzle set can absorb eight minutes and return nothing. Decide in advance that any question resisting you after about 45 seconds gets left, and go back only if time remains. Clearing IBPS Clerk is usually about attempting the easy questions completely, not about solving the hard ones.
Remember There Are Sectional Cutoffs Too
Qualifying for Mains is not purely about your total. Candidates are also required to clear each section, which is why a lopsided score — very strong in reasoning, very weak in English — can fail despite a healthy total. If one section is clearly your weak point, the last week is better spent making it safe than making a strong section stronger.
And If This One Does Not Go Well
The banking calendar runs continuously and the syllabus barely changes between exams — IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk, IBPS PO and SBI PO test substantially the same ground at different difficulty levels. A disappointing prelims is a data point about your current speed, not a verdict, and the preparation transfers directly to the next exam in the cycle.
