IBPS PO Prelims 2026 — The Last 3 Weeks Plan (Exam on Aug 22–23)

2 August 2026·7 min read

Prelims is on 22–23 August 2026. A week-by-week plan for the final stretch — sectional timing, mock cadence, and the accuracy math that decides selection.

Three Weeks Out: What Actually Matters

IBPS PO Prelims 2026 is scheduled for 22 and 23 August 2026, with 7,365 vacancies announced for this cycle and Mains following on 4 October. Three weeks is not enough time to rebuild your preparation — and it does not need to be. Prelims is a speed-and-accuracy filter: 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes, split into three sections with 20 minutes each. From today, everything you do should serve one of three goals: faster question selection, higher accuracy, and calm section transitions. Here is the plan, week by week.

Know the Prelims Pattern Cold

The structure decides your strategy — each section runs on its own 20-minute clock, so you cannot borrow time from a strong section to save a weak one:

SectionQuestionsMarksTime
English Language303020 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude353520 minutes
Reasoning Ability353520 minutes

Week 1 (Aug 2–8): Close the Gaps

Use the first week to fix the leaks that mocks keep exposing — after this week, no new learning:

  • 1Identify your 3 weakest recurring question types (for most aspirants: puzzles and seating arrangement in Reasoning, data interpretation and arithmetic word problems in Quant, reading comprehension inference questions in English). Drill each daily.
  • 2Practice simplification and approximation until they are reflex — these are the fastest marks in Quant.
  • 3Take 2-3 full mocks this week to establish your baseline score and section timing.
  • 4Start a one-page error log per section — every wrong answer gets a one-line entry: question type + why you got it wrong.

Week 2 (Aug 9–15): Mock Every Other Day

This is the improvement week — maximum practice volume with full analysis:

  • 1One full-length timed mock every alternate day, at the same hour as your expected exam shift if possible.
  • 2After each mock, spend at least as long analyzing as you spent attempting. Bucket errors into concept gaps, careless slips, and bad question selection.
  • 3On non-mock days: sectional tests with a hard 20-minute timer, focusing on your weakest section.
  • 4Practice question selection explicitly: in each mock, your first pass through a section should bank the easy questions; flag time-sinks and return only if the clock allows.

Week 3 (Aug 16–21): Taper and Sharpen

The final week is about arriving sharp, not exhausted:

  • 1Reduce to a mock every second day early in the week; make the last full mock 2-3 days before your exam date.
  • 2Revise only from your error log and formula notes — no new material, no new mock series.
  • 3Rehearse your section order and first-five-minutes routine for each section until it is automatic.
  • 4Fix your sleep schedule to your exam-shift timing, download and print your admit card, and plan the route to your centre.

The 0.25 Negative Marking Math

Every wrong answer costs 0.25 marks — four wrong answers erase one correct one. In a 20-minute section there is no time to fight borderline questions, and blind guessing is a losing trade. The candidates who clear prelims are rarely the ones who attempt the most questions; they are the ones whose attempted questions are right. If you cannot eliminate at least two options quickly, skip and move — the next easy question is worth more than a coin-flip on this one.

Sectional Timing: How to Use Your 20 Minutes

A repeatable per-section routine keeps panic out of the exam hall:

  • 1English (20 min): start with the non-RC questions — error spotting, fillers, para jumbles — then give the comprehension passage the remaining time. Vocabulary-based RC questions are faster than inference ones.
  • 2Quant (20 min): first pass on simplification, approximation, and quadratic comparisons; second pass on arithmetic word problems; touch data interpretation sets only with a clear 5+ minutes left.
  • 3Reasoning (20 min): bank inequalities, syllogisms, direction sense, and blood relations first; commit to at most one long puzzle set, and only after the quick wins are secured.
  • 4In every section, spend the final 60 seconds reviewing flagged questions rather than opening a new time-sink.

Admit Card and Exam-Day Checklist

Admit cards are released on ibps.in in the weeks before the exam — download early and print two copies. Carry the printed admit card, an original photo ID, and passport-size photographs as specified in the notification. Check your reporting time on the admit card; it is well before the shift start, and late entry is not permitted. The night before: pack everything, skim your error log once, and stop — a rested brain solves puzzles faster than a crammed one.

One Prep, Three Exams

The IBPS PO syllabus overlaps almost entirely with IBPS Clerk and SBI PO. Every mock you take and every weak topic you fix in the next three weeks compounds across all your banking attempts this season — so even if 22–23 August does not go your way, this preparation is not spent, it is banked.
