IBPS PO 2026 — Exam Stages
IBPS PO has three stages: Prelims (screening), Mains (merit), and Interview. Prelims marks do not count for final selection — only Mains + Interview matter. So Prelims strategy is simple: just clear the cutoff. Save your energy for Mains.

Quantitative Aptitude — Topics
Banking quant is heavier on Data Interpretation than SSC. You need to be fast with calculations.
- 1Data Interpretation (30-40% of Mains): Bar graphs, line charts, pie charts, tables, caselets, missing DI. This alone can make or break your Mains score.
- 2Number Series: Find the pattern in 5-6 numbers. Practice 10 daily — patterns repeat across years.
- 3Simplification & Approximation: BODMAS with large numbers. Speed is everything — target 15 seconds per question.
- 4Arithmetic: Percentage, profit & loss, SI/CI, ratio, time & work, time & distance, average, partnership, boats & streams, pipes & cisterns.
- 5Quadratic Equations: Compare roots of two equations. Memorize the sign rules — these are free marks.
Reasoning Ability — Topics
Puzzles and seating arrangement dominate banking reasoning. Expect 15-20 marks from puzzles alone in Mains.
- 1Puzzles (40-50% of Mains): Linear arrangement, circular arrangement, floor-based puzzles, box-based puzzles, scheduling. Practice 3 puzzles daily.
- 2Seating Arrangement: Linear (single/double row), circular. Combined with other conditions (age, department, etc.).
- 3Syllogism: All/Some/No/Some-not. Learn the Venn diagram method — 100% accuracy possible.
- 4Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Direction Sense, Order & Ranking: 5-10 questions. Easy marks — do not skip.
- 5Machine Input-Output: Pattern detection in sorting sequences. Rare but appears in Mains.
English Language — Topics
Banking English is more comprehension-heavy than SSC. Reading speed matters more than grammar knowledge.
- 1Reading Comprehension (30-40%): 2-3 passages, 1000-1500 words each. Topics: economy, banking, social issues. Read editorials from The Hindu or Indian Express daily.
- 2Cloze Test: Fill in blanks in a passage. Tests vocabulary and contextual understanding.
- 3Error Spotting & Sentence Improvement: Grammar-based. Same rules as SSC — subject-verb agreement, tenses, prepositions.
- 4Para Jumbles & Sentence Rearrangement: Find the logical order. Look for opening/closing sentences and connectors.
- 5Word Usage, Fillers, Phrase Replacement: Vocabulary-based. Build a banking vocabulary list (fiscal, monetary, deficit, etc.).
General/Economy/Banking Awareness
This section is unique to banking exams. It tests current affairs + banking/economy knowledge.
- 1Banking Awareness (30%): RBI functions, types of accounts, NPA, MUDRA, priority sector lending, Basel norms, RTGS/NEFT/UPI.
- 2Economy (30%): GDP, inflation, fiscal policy, monetary policy, Union Budget highlights, economic surveys.
- 3Current Affairs (40%): Last 6 months — RBI policy changes, new schemes, international summits, awards, appointments, MoUs.
The 95% Overlap Strategy
IBPS PO, SBI PO, and IBPS Clerk share 95% of the same syllabus. Prepare at IBPS PO Mains level (hardest) and you are automatically ready for all three. Attempt SBI PO in June, IBPS PO in October, and IBPS Clerk in December — three chances, one preparation.
