What NTPC Means, and What It Recruits For
NTPC stands for Non-Technical Popular Categories — the clerical and commercial roles in Indian Railways that do not require a technical qualification. The posts include Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist and Trains Clerk, among others. Some are open to 12th-pass candidates and others require graduation, so the post you are eligible for depends on your qualification rather than on a single cut-off.
There Is No English Section
This is the single most useful thing to know about RRB NTPC, and it surprises candidates coming from SSC or banking. CBT 1 tests only Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Awareness. The paper itself is available in English, Hindi and several regional languages, so language is a medium here rather than a subject. For an aspirant whose English has been the barrier in SSC or bank exams, that removes the obstacle entirely.
CBT 1 Pattern
CBT 1 is 100 questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes, with one-third of a mark deducted for each wrong answer:

General Awareness Decides This Exam
At 40 of the 100 marks, General Awareness carries more weight than any other section — more than Mathematics and Reasoning individually. Most aspirants arrive with the habits of SSC or banking preparation, where quantitative ability dominates, and under-invest here. In NTPC the arithmetic is reversed: consistent daily current affairs and static general knowledge is worth more marks per hour than another set of quant practice, and it is the section where a well-prepared candidate separates cleanly from an average one.
The Full Selection Process
CBT 1 is only the entry point, and its score is used for shortlisting rather than final merit:

Eligibility and Age
Undergraduate-level posts require a Class 12 pass and are open to candidates aged 18 to 33. Graduate-level posts require a degree and are open to those aged 18 to 36. The usual relaxations apply for reserved categories. Because the same recruitment covers both levels, read the post-wise eligibility in the notification carefully before choosing your preferences — the post you select determines both the exam stages you sit and the salary you start on.
Salary
Starting basic pay ranges from about ₹19,900 to ₹21,700 per month depending on the post, before Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance and the other railway allowances are added. Beyond pay, railway employment carries the benefits that make it attractive in its own right — permanent central government service, pension, medical cover and travel privileges — and Indian Railways remains the single largest recruiter in the country, with postings in every state.
How to Actually Prepare for It
Weight your time to match the paper rather than to match habit. General Awareness deserves daily attention across the whole preparation, not a compressed block at the end, because it is 40 marks of recall that cannot be reasoned out in the exam hall. Mathematics and Reasoning at 30 marks each reward timed practice on the standard question types. And because CBT 1 uses a negative marking of one-third per wrong answer, a blind guess is a losing bet — attempt what you know completely before gambling on what you do not.
