The Most Accessible Railway Exam
RRB Group D covers Level-1 posts across the Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Traffic and Signal & Telecommunication departments of Indian Railways. What sets it apart from almost every other central government exam is the qualification bar: a Class 10 pass is enough, or alternatively an ITI certificate or a National Apprenticeship Certificate from NCVT. No degree is required at any stage, which makes it the realistic entry point for candidates who would not be eligible for NTPC, SSC CHSL or bank exams.
The Scale Is Unusual
The 2026 cycle under CEN 09/2025 notified 22,195 vacancies across ten Level-1 posts, which places it among the largest single recruitment drives in the country. Scale cuts both ways — the vacancy count is large, but so is the applicant pool, and the competition is real. It does mean that a serious, sustained preparation converts more reliably here than in exams where a few hundred posts are contested by a similar number of aspirants.
CBT Pattern
The computer based test is 100 questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes, across four sections:

Reasoning Carries the Most Marks — and Improves Fastest
At 30 marks, Reasoning is the largest section, and it is also the one where a candidate starting from a weak base improves quickest. Unlike General Science or General Awareness, which reward accumulated knowledge, reasoning rewards pattern recognition that comes from practice — series, analogies, classification, coding-decoding and direction sense are all learnable within weeks. If your preparation time is limited, this is where the first hours should go.
Selection Runs Beyond the Written Test
Clearing the CBT is the first step, not the last:

Do Not Leave the PET Until You Have Cleared the CBT
The Physical Efficiency Test is a qualifying stage with no marks carried into merit, and the required standards differ by gender and are specified in the official notification on the RRB regional websites. Candidates routinely treat it as something to worry about later, then find the gap between the CBT result and the PET date is too short to build fitness in. Read the standards when you apply, and train alongside your study rather than after it.
Salary and Benefits
Selected candidates start at ₹18,000 basic per month at Pay Level 1. With Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Transport Allowance, in-hand pay works out to roughly ₹22,500 to ₹25,380 depending on posting city. The pay is modest against banking or Group B posts, but it comes as permanent central government employment with pension, medical cover for the family, and railway travel benefits — and it opens an internal promotion path that a Class 10 qualification would rarely reach otherwise.
Where to Start
Begin with Reasoning, because it is the biggest section and the fastest to improve. Add General Science next — the syllabus sits at roughly Class 10 level and is finite, which makes it far more tractable than open-ended current affairs. Keep General Awareness as daily background reading rather than a study block. Then practise the whole paper at the real 90-minute timing, because managing 100 questions across four subjects is a skill separate from knowing the material.
